The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) today approved the sale of the three-month-old Viagra, a treatment for erectile dysfunction, to a pharmacist in New Zealand. Therapeutic Goods Administration spokeswoman Victoria Lechleiter said the approval was based on a "modest" assessment that Pfizer was not involved in the supply of the product.

The TGA is the UK's regulator for the supply of medicines and has approved the sale of Viagra, a treatment for erectile dysfunction, to Pfizer in Australia.

Pfizer Australia Ltd., which is based in New Zealand, has also approved the sale of the medication to Therapeutic Goods Administration, which approved it last month.

Pfizer is also manufacturing the drug, but it has not yet decided how much the product will cost. Therapeutic Goods Administration spokeswoman Christine Butler said Pfizer is confident it will comply with all regulatory requirements but said it had "no immediate plans for a generic version of Viagra."

"In the event that Pfizer fails to comply with the regulatory requirements, Therapeutic Goods Administration will provide a generic version of Viagra," Butler said. "We are confident that they will make a decision to do so."

She added that the TGA has made clear it would not allow generic drug manufacturers to manufacture the drug.

"As far as we can tell, the pharmaceutical industry has been operating for over 20 years in Australia and Australia, so that's a significant development," Butler said.

Pfizer Australia, which is based in New Zealand, will receive final approval from the Health Sciences Authority, which is based in Dublin, Ireland.
